For the love of cute … AND organic!

We’ve often been told that we have the best selection of baby gifts on the island.  We’re proud to offer lots of organic options including Parade Organics onesies, the fabulously useful Baby Legs, made in Canada Little Star Slings & Teethers and now these cute little gaffers:  Handknit fair trade organic baby rattles.  Serious irresistible cuteness!

Ride with a pure heart …

Ride with a Pure Heart.  That’s on a button by our friends at Sister Sister Buttons and it’s an apt one for the weekend after next.  Fulford Spokespeople (our sweet new neighbours) are hosting a “Bike Fest” Saturday, August 6th from noon to 6 pm to celebrate their opening.  There will be a ribbon cutting at 12:30 pm, a bike swap meet from 1pm to 3pm plus a raffle and music.  Oh and if you’re a kid and you like to deck out your bike, prizes for the most creatively decorated bike in three age groups will be awarded at 2pm.  So cycle on down to Fulford Saturday  the 6th (with a pure heart) for a day of fun and help welcome Spokespeople to the ‘hood!  P.S. Stuff & Nonsense will of course be open and we’ve got several cycling Sister Sister buttons to choose from, and maybe even a few things to bedeck your bike!

Hopping Down the Bunny Trail

As a little girl, I never did quite believe in the Easter Bunny.

The Tooth Fairy made sense somehow, especially as I was told my baby teeth would be used to build their little fairy houses (also incentive to keep my teeth clean by the by).  Santa Claus also had a measure of magic realness, since folklore told me Santa Claus started as Kris Kringle distributing toys at night to children in a dark land where toys were outlawed.  But a huge bunny hopping around on two bunny feet instead of four with a basket hiding eggs just didn’t seem plausible even in the realm of magic.  I mean what useful or altruistic purpose could the Easter Bunny possibly serve?

We did have fun colouring eggs and finding where my Mom had hid them.  My Mom also always left out sweet little gifts of bunnies & duckies for my sister and me.  Chocolate didn’t often enter into the equation (I’m sure both to protect my Mom’s sanity on Easter Sunday and our teeth both).

So for me the Easter Bunny has always been more about a herald to Spring in all its bunny cuteness and daffodil glory.  If you’re looking for some of that cuteness and glory to gift for Easter rather than (or in addition to) chocolate, we have a great selection in stock, with the front runner being our three cotton bunnies zipped inside a carrot.  So hop on down to Fulford and check it out!

What are you wearing to the Gumboot Gala?

It must be Spring.  The sun is shining (in fact it did for a whole day a couple of days ago!) and the Gumboot Gala is just two sleeps away.  Always a fantastic kick off (in gumboots of course) to the market season on Salt Spring, the Gumboot Gala is just one of those feel good, feet stomping community events that shouldn’t be missed. What do you wear to the Gala?  I like to bust out a swishy fancy silky skirt with my gumboots!

There are still tickets left at the store.  Come on in and get yours!

Merry Merry Monday In Fulford

I can barely believe it, but Christmas is right around the corner.  I know this because the Monday before Christmas always has a big star on our calendar, and that Monday is next Monday.  With another happy Stuff & Nonsense Soiree under our belts (which soon will have to be loosened a notch due to all the chocolate & shortbread consumption), I’m now looking forward to Merry Monday, a tradition in Fulford Harbour going back a generation or two.  On this special night, islanders gather around a fire in the festively lit parking lot of Bruce Patterson’s Market, share hot apple cider and sing holiday favourites.  The sing song is led by none other than Valdy, Salt Spring’s own Canadian folk legend.  It’s one of those community events that warms your insides to the tip of your mittens no matter what the weather is doing (and this community gathering has never once been cancelled due to weather).

This year, Jill and the chefs down at the Rock Salt are serving up a scrumptious turkey dinner with all of the fixings (and I can personally testify that she makes one of the best holiday spreads going), with $2 from each plate being donated to Char, a Fulfordite who recently had a stroke.  Jane McKenzie up at Knotty Threads Studio will also be open for those last minute gifts on your list (I highly recommend the Crave chocolates).  And at Stuff & Nonsense, along with stocking stuffers galore and gifts for everyone on your list, for Merry Monday evening only all Christmas decor in the store will be 20% off.

The caroling gets underway at 6:15 and goes until the 7:50 ferry departs Fulford Harbour.  The Rock Salt will be serving up turkey dinner before, during and after the singing, and both Knotty Threads and Stuff & Nonsense will be open until 8 pm that night.

Hope to see all your merry and bright faces there!
